Brat Terriers are a hybrid dog. A Boston terrier and a Rat terrier are bred together to make a Brat Terrier. This hybrid is not considered to be purebreed because the puppies come out looking some what diffrent.
Apearance: There are a few standards that can help indentify a Brat Terrier. They usually have a square shaped medium snout. Their tails should be long and should never be docked. They have erect, bat like ears. They have a black nose, and a moderately long body. The markings on this dog usually are that of a Boston Terrier, they can also come in brindled. Their body seems to be lean because of the Rat Terrier.
Personality: Brat Terriers have a cheerful, happy, and fairly active personality. These dogs are very obedient and eager to please. They are active and love to go on walks or an occasional hike in the woods. Brat Terriers also have an easy going attitude in the house. They love to settle down on your lap, making them a wonderful lap dog. Like female Bostons, female Brats rarely bark.
Training: Like with all puppies, training a Brat Terrier shoud begin at an early age.
Rat terriers are used as a farm dog to control rat populations. Some Brat Terriers may have this trait in them from the Rat Terrier. Most Brat Terrier like other dogs and cats. Proper socialization will help a Brat puppy to better interact with other animals and people.
Brat Terriers make awful watchdogs, since they rarely even bark. They tend to be on the quite side. They are good in apartments if provided daily walks. Thiese dogs will need to wear a coat or a sweater in colder slimites. In general, these dogs love people and are not aggressive towards their owners nor strangers.
Life Span: A Brat Terrier can live up to 15 years or more. It is possible for them to live up to 18 years. They are a great companion, and a generally healthy dog. They shouldn't be overworked on hot days. They will be your companion for many years, a truly lovable and devoted four legged friend.

Describing a Brat:
The Silient Dog is a good way to describe a Brat Terrier. These dogs rarely bark, unlike most other breeds. Females are esspecially silient. My Brat Serenity, will only bark when I encourage her to play and get her acting wild. She will not bark at the door if someone knocks, and she is over one year old. She may growl and make cute little barking noises when playing or if she wants to play with a dog or something. These dogs are great for apartments, you won't worry about people complaining about a noisey dog!
Obedient is another way I'd describe a Brat. Very easily trained, they can be taught some tricks. My Brat Serenity can roll over, sit, down, shake, beg, and sometimes bow. She is obedient and I easily taught her to walk on the leash by me. Shes smart, and friendly, welcoming other dogs with a bow to play.
Good Child's dog for a child that knows how to handle a smaller dog. (they don't tend to be a snappy type of dog but may get hurt if held the wrong way. For example, dropped on the ground) Brats are active, and would make a great companion for a child or teenager. This breed would be excellent for a first time dog owner, as its eager to please its master is very high.
Good dog for First time Dog Owners.
Good dog for Outdoor activities Brats would love walks, hiking, playing with a hose ect. Although they are calm in the house and are fine with a daily romp around the yard on a leash, or a exersizing walk.
Moaning and Groaning noises are from the Rat Terrier. Serenity moans and groans on my lap as if shes talking to me in a cute manner.
Understands Well, Brats seem to understand what you are trying to tell them and liked being talked to. They can learn words like "walk".

I have a male brat named Draco he is the best dog I have ever owned! I could not imagine my life without him. If you want a sweet loving compainion get a brat you will not be disappointed.
ReplyDeleteI have a brat terrier named Oliver. He is such a great dog! I've been wanting to get him another brat so that he will have a companion, but I have not been able to find ANY brat breeders anywhere. Does anyone know of any brat breeders? Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteHey, sadly, there are hardly any breeders for the brat out there. I got mine from a breeder in PA that had a few litters. However, I suggest you like my pages on Facebook about Brats, and check in often to see if anyone ever posts any advertisement for puppies or anything else that may interest you. It is very rare however, that a litter of brat pups are born into the world! But good luck on your search for breeders and thanks for you comment!

DeleteThese comments are hilarious as my brat is total opposite of what you said! She used to be quiet, but now has followed after our two loud dachshunds and is barking all the time for nothing. She does not like to be held, she is afraid of everyone she does not know, including other dogs. She will lay or sleep beside you but she is not cuddly in any way and does not like to be on your left. She will not let you kiss her or anything LOL. She is very ornery and funny but definitely the opposite of what you had stated. I must have gotten an oddball LOL
DeleteWell this makes me feel better because I was thinking the same thing about my male brat. He grew up with my Alaskan Eskimo who barked at nothing also so naturally my brat now barks at everything and nothing lol. He does not snuggle unless there is a thunderstorm then he sleeps right beside my head. I still love my Brat though :)
DeleteWe recently adopted a brat his name is scooby and he is about a year old. Scooby is an amazing dog who had a rough first year. His tail was docked and they messed it up poor baby. He is great with our kids high energy..he and our 8yr old little boy don't stopuntil bedtime.what we ddidn't expect was the protectiveness of the kids. Scooby will not all strangers near his kiddos he sits between the stranger and the kids and growels. His favorite thing to do is pop bubbles. The kids blow bubbles and he jumps and flips in the air to pop them :) scooby was an amazing addition to our little family he has become one of our kids.
ReplyDeleteHave had a brat for 5 years, Mater is a great loyal dog and our best friend. Very obedient and doesn't run off.
ReplyDeleteI found my brat Henry 3 years ago when he was 12 weeks old. .he was a breeders " oops " litter btwn her pure female Boston & male Rat. .thier opps was the best day of my life.. their oops was my gain.. my only regret is that I didn't take 2!! He is a fantastic dog with an awesome personality.. very obedient, sooo loving, great with other animals, loves to play, loves to cuddle face to face.. he's the love of my life & I look forward to many many more happy years with my baby boy... my Brat is the best breed I have ever owned.. my husband & I don't have any children so our dogs & cats are our kids!!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you found him, they truly are great companions! Very obedient & loyal. Thanks so much for sharing your story!
DeleteAbout 10 years ago we were blessed to stumble upon an adorable 8 month old brat terrier at our local animal shelter. Sadly she passed away last year and we are still mourning her loss. She was such a remarkable pup! She was sweet, loyal, funny, smart, gentle and the list goes on. She helped us welcome our two human baby girls into the world and sadly our youngest only had the privilege of knowing our sweet pup for the first 3 weeks of her life. I know it's impossible to replace our sweet Sadie girl but oh how I wish we could find another sweet Brat to adopt.
ReplyDeleteSorry for your loss, Sadie was my dog's mother's name. They really are great companions.
DeleteI adopted a Brat from the local shelter. She loves to bark. She hangs her head out the window barking. She stands on the bed at night and watches for anything to bark at.Like the Rat Terrier she loves to roll in ground hog poop and any other poop.I often have to wash her twice a day. I call her and she just looks at me, like "no way am I coming."
ReplyDeleteRat terriers are ferocious and I love them. I am glad my Brat is more ferocious than normal. She is very loyal (I named her Ruby) and I adore her, but I have yet to experience the quiet dog folks talk about.
Sounds!alot like our 2 brats barks at strangers but only for a min. Rolls in the grass on something dead we think.but we have one that loves playing catch with a ball she drives us nuts lol.

ReplyDeleteMy brat is a male going to be 10 next November. His name is Eddy. I called him turdle for being a turd. I had him and his sister as puppies. Sadly I don't have his sister anymore. She had gotten sick from a friend's dog and didn't make it. Eddy has severe separation anxiety. My ex-husband said the owners said Eddy was always whining to be close to them. He has quite a few growths all over. I didn't know if anyone else has experienced this. He barks all the time and potties on anything if he can't go with me. Is there any advice any of you could offer me on if there is any way to change his behavior or am I too late?
ReplyDeleteThey tend to be really bright and want to please. We had one with separation anxiety and had to put him on a low dose medication and that helped a lot. I don't think it is ever too late to train, but you might want to consult with a local dog trainer. The growths may be benign lipomas due to age, although that sounds early to me.A vet could probably tell you. Our last dog, who lived to be 16 had them all over.
DeleteMy brat is covered, too. Since he was a pup. The vet said it is canine papilloma virus. Not contagious.
DeleteWe have a BRAT named Emmitt, and he is the BEST dog. Very bright and wants to please. He does bark a lot but will quiet when prompted. Just wants to be with us. He does require a moderate amount of exercise but is quite content to chew on his bones and play rope in the house.
ReplyDeleteWe lost our Brat "Rocco" just over a year ago and I have been searching ever since. Any leads as to where to find another???
ReplyDeleteMy brat has warts everywhere too. The get said not too remove them because it can change their personality and it's not worth the risk to put him to sleep. They are not contagious inter species. Hope that helps
ReplyDeleteWell we have 2 female brats they are pretty good when its just us in the house but when company comes over they bark like crazy or if they see other dogs they bark. So the article is wrong that they dont bark . But we love them
ReplyDeletefood recommendations for brat terriers?
ReplyDeleteWhere can i buy a Brat?
ReplyDeleteLove my brat Scooby. He is a male, very athletic, smart, sometimes stubborn, and a complete love bug. I was looking for a Boston when I got him. His owner could not deal with him and her Pomeranian because he was so rambunctious .something drew me to him. He's honestly the best dog ever. I get the low key barking alarm system.....if he barks, you better check, and the athletic side of a rat that isn't prone to heat issues due to short snout when playing. He's my bundle of joy.
ReplyDeleteMy baby Micaela was 14 yrs when I had to have her 'put to sleep' just a week ago. Worst day of my life! She was the sweetest, smartest dog I've ever had or ever seen! Miss her desperately!
ReplyDeleteI lost my Brat Terrier last year to sudden death we are assuming she was poisened. We are looking for another brat terrier but are having a hard time finding one at all can anyone help us out please email me at christykay45@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteLooking for a Brat. Lost mine recently and would like to get another. They’re great dogs.
